Very interesting topic ! I really appreciate such documented topic - and by the way, I'm busy on a long-term project which consist of making a detailed article in which I list all the existing body armor / flak jackets (and their accessories) used by the US Military. I've finished the Amercain Civil war and nearly finished the WW1 and WW2. This topic is very instructive and help me a lot for my article ! ;) Thanks for the sharing.

Dustin, you posted some nice photos here ! Do you have more information about the last one ? It seems the aircrew is wearing an experimental apron. Do you know the date of this picture ?

"As you know, you go to war with the Army you have. They're not the Army you might want or wish to have at a later time. You can have all the armor in the world on a tank and it can (still) be blown up..." - Donald Rumsfeld (Camp Buehring, KU - Dec. 8, 2004)

If you recall in the conversation the picture in Sweetings book page 129 was referenced a few times. This is the same guy, same pose ,...everything except the apron has been changed. There was no information just photographs, I cherry picked a few since this topic was fresh on my mind.

Those are great photos Dustin, thanks!

I came across these photos of Liberator aircrew preparing to take off on the 9th AF's 8/1/43 "Black Sunday" raid on Ploesti from their base at Bengasi, Libya. Note they are using the Wilkinson-made vests with tapered sporran, as shown in the original post of this thread.
