HistoryNut Posted January 14, 2015 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2015 I recently purchased a small group and this photo was included. Can anyone help me ID the unit patch? I find it interesting even the civilian lady has the patch sewn on her dress. Are the men in the front civilian training pilots? I do not recognize the uniforms or cap insignia. Thank you in advance for the help.

QED4 Posted January 15, 2015 Share #4 Posted January 15, 2015 The flight instructors are wearing this badge on their hats. I think the patches on the soft caps are one of several like this one, I have them with an S in the center for solo and also 1 and 2, I think they also come with a 3 These were worn at Ft. Rucher from the late 1950s to the late 1960s
Patchcollector Posted January 15, 2015 Share #5 Posted January 15, 2015 It looks to me like the patches on the baseball type caps and the ladies dress are circular, with a bird or wings on them.
HistoryNut Posted January 15, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted January 15, 2015 Thank you very much for the information. QED4, that is definitely the cap badge. However, Patchcollector is correct regarding the patch on the ball caps and lady's dress. It is a circular/oval patch with a bird whos wings extend well beyond the the edges of the patch. The are also letters/number on the top and bottom edges of the patch.
HistoryNut Posted January 15, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted January 15, 2015 Does the Army have Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) class patches like the Air Force does? Perhaps those are class patches?
Patchcollector Posted January 15, 2015 Share #8 Posted January 15, 2015 As I look at the patches in your photos I'm reminded of the 203rd Recon Airplane Company (RAC) insignia.Named the "Hawkeyes",this was a Birddog unit. But the wings of the bird do not extend beyond the edge of the patch on the examples I have in my collection, and seen online.Perhaps there was an even earlier US made version produced before the unit went to Nam? Here are some examples I found online Here is a link to the excellent 203rd site where I found the patch images: http://203rdhawkeyes.net/home
