USN Boathook that came off of a YTB (Yard Tug Boat) at Pearl Harbor

It was also commonly used on Whaleboats, gigs, and other small craft throughout the fleet.

The shaft 9 feet long, is made of solid oak & has a groove cut into one side. The groove is aligned with the hook so you know the direction by feel.  It's finished with a heavy coat of boat varnish.

US Navy Mail Drop Box

This would have been affixed to the door of the Ships' Servicemans office, i.e. Ships Store & Barber Shop.  Small ships only had one (1) SH if any, and he was the Mailman, Barber, Store Clerk & ran the Laundry.  A busy man who knew everyone's business on board. He also got our projection movies which we showed after evening chow on the mess decks & the Wardroom.  The Electricians or Interior Communications man serviced and ran the projectors.

Heavy canvas and leather Mailbag used on the SAFEGUARD which would be secured by a USN brass padlock on the rings at top.

Only one is protruding through the slots but there are five rings that the strap goes through and then is locked.

I have several of these ARS life rings around here somewhere and when I find them I'll post more photographs

You may see one of these life rings in this USS RECOVERY photograph at lower right.  There is also an 'ELLS' salvage anchor on the left, invented by Adm. Edward Ellsberg.  An ARS had eight (8) of these.  Four hanging from the hull as depicted and four more in the salvage hold.

SOUND POWERED TELEPHONE
The Navy's time-tested and proven emergency shipboard communications system, requires no external power to operate.

In cases where electrical power is unavailable to other communication systems, Sound Powered Telephone (SPT) will continue to operate, and is therefore the primary means of communication during damage control evolutions or when close-quarter ships movements will not tolerate a loss of communications. To operate, you select the station number and operate the crank which will make a "growler" sound rather than a ring tone.
