jason_w Posted December 30, 2014 #1 Posted December 30, 2014 Hello, I recently acquired this flag and was wondering if any forum members who can read Japanese might be able to tell me if it mentions the soldiers unit or any other interesting information. Any help would be very much appreciated. Regards, Jason
tarbridge Posted December 30, 2014 #6 Posted December 30, 2014 Jason...I will lock this thread as it does not fit the scope of the USMF. ..but anyone who can help.just needs to pm you. It has now been reopened to include history.
jason_w Posted December 30, 2014 Author #7 Posted December 30, 2014 Thanks Robert. Sorry about that, I should have added the Vet info first. This flag was removed from a destroyed Japanese aircraft at the Hollandia airfield on New Guinea in 1944. The pilot, CPT Herbie Cochran flew P-38's with the 433rd Fighter Squadron. He describes this flag in a letter to his wife as; “Yes sweetheart the rising sun I sent you was from a Japanese plane theres (sp) all kinds of that junk laying around here.” CPT Cochran had three victories and earned the Air Medal with clusters and the DFC. jason_w Posted December 30, 2014 Author #8 Posted December 30, 2014 Here is a photo of CPT Cochran with his P-38.
muddyboots Posted December 30, 2014 #10 Posted December 30, 2014 It does have the soldiers name it is just to the right of the meatball. I can't translate it but I don't see anything that would say or signify a unit or group. I would try the WAF in there Japanese forum.
