Longbranch Posted December 24, 2014 Share #9 Posted December 24, 2014 These are very cool little lights, and it's great to see so many of them as New Old Stock. Though the name on the boxes simply state "Attachable Electric Light", I think it's neat that they are actually intended to be attached to life preservers and used for distress signals. I believe the examples you show, with the safety-pin type attachment, are pre-1945, possibly pre-1944. There are actually a couple of good threads about these here on the forum. Just search for "USN distress marker" or "USN life preserver light".

dustin Posted December 24, 2014 Share #11 Posted December 24, 2014 The threads you will find are outdated but will give you an idea of variety. The ID is correct as they are life preserver lights for the Bureau of Ships USN. The light you have was produced between Sept. 1944 through to approx. Feb. 1945. It is the middle pattern. Pictured are the three principle metal body USN lights under spec 17L16. From left pre standardization (interim) light, standardization pattern, amendment pattern with stouter pin. The middle light you will find has a different looking switch than yours and that is because it was manufactured by Fulton.
