I picked up a 60s era trigger assembly for the 03, which uses a 3 round magazine, still in the box with instructions. It is a drop-in part & I won't even use it! I like them original! I bought it because it's a neat piece.

 

But in the 40s when this booklet was sold, we weren't even at the "big fins & buckets of chrome" stage...most items were strictly utilitarian & served a purpose. These rifles were not that old at the time. Just think how many people customize their 1980s rifles without a thought! We see it as a horror now, but at the time, they were simply "improving" the functionality of an item that would put food on the table!
