CW Engineer Hat Insignia - small size

Just got this as an early gift. Its the small size 1851 CW era Engineer hat insignia. Seems to b in pretty nice shape.

 

Thoughts?

IMHO, this looks like a reproduction piece to me. If you look at the soldering on the back there appears to be no oxidation. Considering this if it was an 1851 piece, it would now be 163 years old. It is not plausible to look this pristine after 163 years. As a collector of Engineer badges and insignia I have seen hundreds of badges and insignia over the years. The attached picture is from the first of 4 Riker mounts full of Engineer insignia in my collection.

It looks fine, the lack of oxidation would not concern me too much. I own 1000's of pieces of pre 1900 insignia purchased from W. Stokes Kirk in Philadelphia, that show no wear or oxidation what so ever.

I have an infantry insignia I got from Dave Taylor last year that has the same color to the solder. I am under the impression these are likely surplus pieces from Bannerman or the like.
