Patriot Posted July 7, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted July 7, 2008 Evidently this is an Army Special Services golf bag, of which I cannot imagine too many exist. The clubs are around, but again, very sparse. This one is on it's way to me, so I will take better pictures once it is in my hands. Definitely an item for the collection. I guess I need to find the clubs for this now.... just to complete the set. Any idea who would have used this? The image of that "Naval officer" playing golf in the movie "Pearl Harbor" comes to mind. Certainly not something that would have been used by your typical enlisted man! robinb Posted July 7, 2008 Share #6 Posted July 7, 2008 I saw one of those at a surplus store maybe 15 years ago. It was pretty ratty so I didn't buy it. Haven't seen another until yours today.
M60 Driver Posted July 7, 2008 Share #7 Posted July 7, 2008 I would imagine that these were used to carry rental golf sets at a military golf course. Nearby me, Ft Lewis has long had a very nice golf course. Funny thing is that as a young kid I use to carry that same style of canvas golf bag when caddying for my dad to earn a few dollars. hbtcoveralls Posted July 8, 2008 Share #8 Posted July 8, 2008 HI All Special services had all kinds of US marked athletic equiptment. I have a soft ball glove, a USN soft ball bat and just passed up a US marked volleyball . I also had a friend who had a us marked set of horseshoes, the throwing kind not the wearing kind LOL. Great find. T. Bowers
cherokee tj Posted July 8, 2008 Share #9 Posted July 8, 2008 Played golf a few times at the Special Services golf course at Fort Gordon Ga. seems like the set I played with had MacGreger clubs if you want to stick some clubs in it.
Patriot Posted July 8, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted July 8, 2008 Cherokee tj, That's correct. What I need for this is a set of McGregor HICKORY SHAFT clubs, with the heads marked for the Army Special Services. I am not a golf person at all, but this could be the start of something really unique - something not every collector has! Patriot

Patriot Patriot, It was 1968 when I was at Fort Gordon for Signal School (72B40), as I remember the bags looked like this but were Stenciled with numbers and had Fort Gordon stenciled on them also. Kowning the Army they could have been as old as WWII not really being up to date with sports equipmeent a big priority.

tylis2 Posted July 10, 2008 Share #13 Posted July 10, 2008 I bought one about 20 years ago on the other side of the state. Still had clubs in it..wood shaft, I don't recall if they were marked. So I get home, open up the little ball pouch on the side and find a scorecard from 1948 from the municipal golf course about 5 minutes from my house. Always thought they just wanted to come home.. MAW Posted December 19, 2009 Share #16 Posted December 19, 2009 I just got offered a set of these golf clubs.....the same bag, plus 4 woods and 2 irons. Cool stuff, but I have no idea of the rarity or the value. Can anyone offer some insight?
