The tang of the buttplate is unit marked "1st Sep. co." which I translate as 1st separate company. The only finds I have on that description refer to National Guard black outfits in Maryland and Connecticut. I have seen other NG numbered separate companies which are not black. Can anyone tell me if a 1st sep co. rifle (including mine) indeed did belong to a black unit? Or are there other 1st sep. co. units identified as being white? The Maryland black 1st Separate Company was called up for the Spanish-American War, but was not shipped to Cuba, and pulled other duties stateside.
