Recommended Posts

Pick these up yesterday on a short trip, 8th Air Force uniform has no name ribbons held on by some metal clips instead of clutches, Aerial Gunner badge & Wings sterling are pinback. Uniform has quite a bit of moth munch. WWI medal has box with name on it & receipt with name on back and stamps for campaigns, also a New Jersey state victory medal with same name engraved. Medals will be framed soon. Comments welcome.

Your 8th AF uniform is for a pilot, not an aerial gunner, and it is very unusual to see the "Aerial Gunner" Q bar being worn by a pilot. The bar isn't all that common. The metal clips holding the ribbon bar on are often called "Tinnerman clips" and they are correct for a Wolf Brown ribbon bar. They were not the most popular fasteners, so it is common to see regular clutch fasteners on the back sides since they didn't snag on clothing like the metal clips. Your veteran probably served his entire time in service in the Pacific and was assigned to the 8th AF when they were re-directed to the PTO after VE Day.

It looks like you made a couple of great finds. Congrats.
