These are from the collection of LCDR (mustang) Edward Ross Morris, USN, who served between 1921 and 1953. AMM1c Morris was a survivor of the crash of the zeppelin USS Macon (ZRS-5) off Point Sur, Calif. on Lincoln's Birthday in 1935. He was stationed twice at NAS Lakehurst during his career and was stateside during WW2.

I picked this copy of the "Wing Ding" several years ago. At first I thought it was a theater made Thanksgiving invitation but upon closer inspection it is an invite for a monthly gathering of officers based upon a practice started by Gen. George Washington and further promoted during WWII by Brig. Gen. Hodges.

Never heard of her? She was the controversial private yacht of Admiral Ernest King, commander in chief of the US Fleet and Chief of Naval Operations.  Still afloat and fully restored to her 1921 configuration, she is now the Royal Yacht for the Principality of Monaco.

1944 - The Crew (also the root of the controversy, there's a war on Admiral, do we really need to tie up these men on your private Potomac yacht?)

Interior - At least they dined well in 1944

I don't have a menu from this but I have a Thanksgiving memory from my time in service. I was lower enlisted and with the 4/7 Cav (we may still have been flagged as 5/17 at the time), the cavalry squadron of the 2ID in the western corridor in Korea. I pulled guard duty on the HHT motor pool that day. The CQ runner relieved me for dinner and I headed for the DFAC. Shortly after I sat down, a helicopter landed and the division commander (MG Tommy Franks) entered. I don't know if it was because I was eating alone or because I was the only one eating in uniform but he asked to sit with me.

I was almost finished and I knew the CQ would be irritated if I took too long but I couldn't just walk out on the General. I was gone from my post about an hour and fifteen minutes. As I was leaving the DFAC, the CQ came in looking for me. As the CQ started to chew me out, General Franks turned, shook my hand, thanked me for the conversation (we talked about football) and wished me a Happy Thanksgiving. The CQ's eyes got wide, he stammered out the greeting of the day to the General and let me go.

Here is the 1916 Thanksgiving Day menu for the 4th Cavalry, this particular menu gives the roster for G Troop of the 4th Cavalry. Appearing to be tissue paper it measures 14"x14" and has a rather ornate rose drawn/printed on it.
