Here are a few of my personal plaques from over the years. Nothing too impressive and I'm happy to have a place to stick them rather than in a box in the shed...

Nice Saigon Plaque!!

 

Here is a end of tour award made by the crew, and given to the original Executive Officer (XO) of the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72. It is the Lincoln's first wheel that was the originally installed by Newport News shipyard. This is one of my favorite pieces that I have acquired.

This one is an unusual plaque. This one was awarded to the last Aviator to launch off of the USS F. D. Roosevelt CV-42 during the1975 Med cruise. It has a catapult hold back fitting for the A-7 Corsair that was used for the last launch. LT. Grimard was a pilot assigned to VA-15.

Navy plaques are made from many different materials. Brass, Bronze, Ceramic, Aluminum, Resin, Bakelite, Plastic, etc.

 

This is an example of a Resin plaque from the Radar Picket USS LOWE (DER-325)

....and these are some molds used in shipboard machine shops to make the plaques, in this instance from the Submarine Rescue ship USS COUCAL (ASR-8)

 

Thanks for showing this version of the molds used for the dentist plaster type plaques.

I really like USN unit plaques. They make great displays, but, do take up a lot of space and are a challenge to store more than a dozen of them.

I met a navy veteran, Larry Vail, whose job was to make plaques for a couple of ships he served on. He had over a thousand plaques stored away back in 2014 when he and I corresponded. I've got photos of a couple hundred from his plaque collection.

SERVRON 5 Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

 

 

Service Squadron Five controlled all of the Towing, Rescue, Diving assets in NORTHPAC and WESTPAC for the US Third Fleet and US Seventh Fleet during the Vietnam war.  Both of the ARS's I served on reported to SERVRON 5

Yes I agree, these plaques do present a large storage problem, but I really do not actively collect these plaques.

 

My problem is that whenever I happen to run across one, I have to buy it!! Hopefully I wont run across too many!!

 

I do have another plaque from CDR. Motley when he was assigned to the Saratoga. This one is hand-made and was probably given to him by his Department Sailors.

 

The clipped wings were also CDR. Motley's.

Here are three plaques from a grouping of a retired submariner. These are a bit more interesting than some I’ve seen. I have information that he served on the following subs: USS Requin (SS-481), USS Carp (SS-338), USS James Madison (SSBN 627) USS Daniel Webster (SSBN 626) USS Von Steuben (SSBN 632).

Love the “ Screwbirds” cruised with them during my time in the Navy. 
 

Here is an old one.
 

VT-17 flew the Avenger in WW2. This patch design was in use between 1944-49. The squadron name was changed from VT-17 to VA-6B in early 1946. The patch design is painted carved wood.
