KASTAUFFER Posted January 29, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2007 This is the only one of these I have ever seen , outside of copies held by the NPRC in St Louis . ( the ones that didnt burn ). This is an official US Army service record book that holds the records of an AAF soldier who was captured on Mindanao in May 1942 . I have his grouping in my collection. This is taped in his scrapbook. According to his notiation : " Service Record carried by me through 42 months of hell in Japanese prison camps May 10, 1942 - Oct 1 , 1945 ." It makes you wonder how he hid it! He was initially held in POW camps in the Philippines but was later sent to Japan where he was liberated in 1945 . Here is a pic of him taken on Mindanao in 1942 . Allan H. Posted January 29, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 29, 2007 Kurt, I am always blown away by not only the quality of the items that you post, but the rarity as well. While I am sure that many collectors here might tend to just glance at this and say, "yeah, that's kind of interesting," you and I can both appreciate just how RARE these items are. I have been collecting for 32 years now and have NEVER seen one of these that was filled out and in the veteran's or in collectors' hands. I appreciate your taking the time to share this rare piece of history. Allan

kfields Posted January 2, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 2, 2011 Kurt, I know you know this but this is one of those centerpieces of a collection that rarely present themselves to a collector in their lifetime. First of all, a fellow has to be knowledgable enough to recognize the significance. Secondly, you have to belly-up and be prepared to shell out the cash! I missed this post the first time around so my hat is off to you for such a superb item! Thanks for showing it, Kim
a6skin9 Posted January 4, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 4, 2011 I have one that is filled out that I found at a flea market for $5.00 many years ago. I'll have to dig it out and photograph it now.
