USS FLORIKAN ASR 9 assigned to Submarine Development Group 1 (now submarine development squadron 5)

Breaking new ground, she worked with the DSRV program (MYSTIC etc) to perfect a new mini-submersible method of rescuing submariners.

Nice patches and related items.I've always been interested in the Rescue patches.I have some in my collection,will have to get them out and see if I have any not posted here.

So far my favorite here are the Windlass pieces.

High Flight

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silver wings;

Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there

I've chased the shouting wind along and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue

I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,

where never lark, or even eagle flew;

and while, with silent, lifting mind I've trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Don't let the B@stards wear you down -"Vinegar" Joe Stillwell

Reasonable people adapt themselves to the world.Unreasonable

people attempt to adapt the world to themselves.All progress,

therefore, depends on unreasonable people.

Thanks, I'm skipping several hulls to just show diving related items rather than all of the ARS, ASR, etc ships.

Please do post what you have (dive lockers, teams, HCU/MDSU, DSRV, SEALAB, development, research, scientific or just plain cool)

USS SUNBIRD ASR 15 - Built in WWII but not commissioned until June 23rd, 1950, just two days before North Korea invaded the South. She was truly a cold warrior, in service 1950 to 1993. The background photo is SUNBIRD rendering assistance to a damaged patrol boat with a Coast Guard cutter (an ex-USN ATF fleet tug) standing by. The upper photo is SUNBIRD at sub base New London.

The round patch is her older 1950's patch. The other jacket size patches came in at least 3 sizes although the design is identical
