historyrecovered Posted November 8, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted November 8, 2014 What is a new stock exactly and what style was that used for ? I know I sound foolish but I don't collect these helmets generally.
Bugme Posted November 8, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 8, 2014 He means "New Old Stock" (NOS) This designation is for items that are old but never used. So, it's still new, but old, unissued, unused..
lucky52 Posted November 22, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 22, 2014 The APH 5 helmets were still being issued in June of 1969 in flight school.I got to Viet Nam in May of 70 and was issued an SPH-4.When I got out in 1971 they didn't want the APH-5 back. The APH-5 was used in Viet Nam prior to the SPH-4.Maybe some earlier Viet Nam guys know when the SPH-4 came out. The first contract year I've seen for the SPH-4 is 1969. I know when my father initially got to Vietnam in May 1969 he still had his APH-5 til at least November. Somewhere between Nov 69 and Fed 70 he got his SPH-4. Sadly that SPH stayed in Vietnam when he left in May 70. Had a APH-5 again at Ft Eustis til 1971 and as you said they didn't want it back and he got to take it home.
