green hell Posted November 7, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2014 Hi, All - I have a pennant flag that is part of a group from a Second Division Tarawa veteran. The Marine passed away before I came into possession of the group. Family history says the flag was taken from the long pier on Betio. It's not a military flag, but does have Kanji printed along the fly which I've had translated to "Cho-Jun Maritime Trading Company". This would make sense if I can prove that this company had a contract with the Japanese government to supply the various island outposts. Any freighter from Japan would have had to anchor off the reef and then send a 'whale boat' in to the pier. This pennant would have shown them where along the pier they were supposed to tie up. I've been unable to find a researcher in Tokyo by using the internet and my emails to the archives have gone unanswered. Any assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I have attached two photos, one of the flag with some other items from the group and a close-up of the Kanji. Thanks much - Chris
