Wearing Medals-- 1918-1949

Adam started a post for pictures of the "original owners" of US medals issued between 1861 and 1917, so here's the next installment, for photos of medals from 1918 through WW2. As he said,

"One of the main reasons that many of us collect medals is because they are often attributed (either with a number or an engraved name). It’s the story of the man (or woman) behind the medal that is so compelling and creates the desire to possess the medal that is the physical representation of that service. When researching a medal recipient finding a photo of the person in question is a “home run”. And a “grand slam” is a photo of them wearing the actual medals. This puts an actual face to the man behind the medals."

So, without further ado, feel free to post your pre-1950 pictures of men or women wearing their US medals here.

RADM Julian L. Latimer was awarded the Navy Cross for his WWI service as CO of the USS Rhode Island. He served in the West Indies during the Spanish American War. From 1925-1927 he commanded the Special Service Squadron out of Panama that patrolled Central American waters and landed Marines during the Second Nicaraguan campaign. He retired in 1930.

Forgive the lack of medals in this one; I'll take a chance and post this one as it is ribbons and all I have is the custom rack. The set in the photo is in the group owners possession. The set I have is missing the frame around the Korean PUC but is original to him and the grouping. One of the few items I have where I have a photo of the recipient. Thread on the group and LCDR Harmon here:

AB, Thanks for starting this thread. This is one of my favorites; Vice Admiral Joel T. Boone, USN. The first image is from Wikipedia (and published elsewhere). The second pic is a close up that I made from the original photo, which is at the Washington Navy Yard photo library. (I did this long before scanners were an option so I had to take a 35mm photo of the photo.)

Here's a pair of (original) photos of George Henry Dean getting awarded his Navy Cross. I've got his Navy Cross, ribbon rack and he was awarded an Air Medal as well. Myself and another forum member have been trying to research it more but keep running into dead ends so far. You can find the citation here: http://projects.militarytimes.com/citations-medals-awards/recipient.php?recipientid=19066
