We lived and worked in a large Iraqi palace on top of a high (man-made) hill south of BIAP during our rotations to Iraq.

In January '06 we took mortar fire late one afternoon. The first round struck a lower part of the hill and detonated. The second round struck the hard wall of the palace, just near the entrance (wooden doors). Several of us were just inside the doorway getting ready to go to chow.

The round did not detonate, and simply shattered apart upon impact with the side of the building!

After EOD checked out the site, we divvied up the shrapnel as keepsakes - and as testament to our good luck that day!

Me standing near the palace entrance (the marked up area at the upper left part of the photo shows where the round struck).

Nice Souvenir, Navy Customs confiscated all my shrapnel. I know you guys that worked at "the House on the Hill" as we called it usually took different routes home. Nice souvenir (guessing a Chinese 82mm?) and thanks for sharing.

I appreciate it Wade ... Our house stood out somewhat! It was nice to have the entire complex to ourselves, though.

I was there from Nov 04 to Mar 05 living out of a villa near the washington Group laundry by Gate1, We worked from the roof of your building. rode those quads and drove the landrovers many times (the white SUV ones and the Doc Tari tigerstriped ones (Hannibal). The best thing was you had the best view of the entire Baghdad AO from the roof.

We held promotion and reenlistment ceremonies on the roof ... for the view.

Both taken in January 05 the Clown van was taken Jan 19th, the day before a VBIED hit the gate on Yankees and vaporized one of the LSF, and cracked the walls and broke windows atop the hill.
