Salvage Sailor

Aloha Everyone,

Here's another catch-all topic for Navy patches specifically for Departments, Divisions or Rates, either shipboard, aviation, base or schools

To start off....

Engineering Department

The second USS MOUNT HOOD (AE-29) Kilauea Class Ammunition ship

In service 1971-1999. The only one of her class that was not transferred to the MSC

......and a Division Patch

OI Division USS LAWRENCE (DDG-4)

OI Division is comprised of Operation Specialists (OS) assigned to CIC - the Combat Information Center

When this patch was made, the OS rate was then the RD - Radarman rate.

Depicted on the patch are dividers, a range scale and an oscilloscope 'blip' along with the usual lightning bolt and nuclear destruction icons.

LAWRENCE was the third DDG of the Charles F. Adams class in service from 1962 to 1990

Salvage, what a great way to start the day ?. Every SM I know used that term. Wish I still had my Div patch from USS St. Louis. It was a Gator leaning on a search light holding a coffee cup giving a "C" by semephore. Only had 11 made, so if you find one, it's rare.

.....and for the Gunners Mates - another Guided Missile Destroyer

USS MACDONOUGH (DDG-39), my sister ship originally a Destroyer Leader (DL-8) then (DLG-8) redesignated in 1975 (note the DDG 39 on the anchor) Farragut class, also known as a Coontz class in service 1961-1992. This class was designed as all-gun DL's but were converted to DLG/DDG.  They were also the only DDG's to be renumbered which is why you'll find patches for the Farragut/Coontz class ships with different hull numbers (i.e. DLG-8/DDG-39)  When the DE's were changed to FF's and the DLG's to DDG's or CG's all kept their hull numbers except for this class of ship.

This is a Cold War patch - Main Battery - Death from a Distance - depicting a kill with a SM (Standard Missile) on a Commie Mig

.....and here's a Standard Missile patch, this one being for a SM2

These dept. patches showing ratings are one of my favorite areas to collect. I've noticed a few on ebay that appear to be old, from CVAs, etc. but are not getting any bids. They all appear to be somewhat soiled. Anyone else notice this? Thanks.

Many (if not all) of those are current Vietnamese replicas which have been 'aged'.

USS HALYBURTON (FFG-40)

Oliver Hazard Perry class 'long-hull' gas turbine frigate

in service 1984-2014

Recently decommissioned, she was a squared away ship making long Med/Red Sea/PG/STANAFORLANT

deployments for 25 years before the Maersk Alabama incident.

IMG_1675.JPG

USS HALYBURTON (FFG-40)

1990's Signalman's Patch - The Pirate may seem ironic now in retrospect, considering her role in ending the piracy incident in 2009.

She was homeported at Mayport, FL and often deployed to Caribbean and South American waters on drug deterrent patrols where

she scored several times making substantial cocaine busts - Like pirate raiders in the Caribbean.....

The Signalman rate (SM) was disestablished in 2004

Dialing back 60 years.....for those of us who recall when vacuum tubes were 'high tech'

Electronics Officer, circa 1956, taken from a USS REDFISH (SS-395) Officers foul weather jacket

The rubber band holding it together is a nice touch, shows true confidence in one's abilities and equipment.
