Recon team Grim Reaper had been in Happy Valley for three days and had made contact at least once each day. At about 1800 on 30 October we climbed about 10 meters up the hill from the trail, then back-tracked about 20 meters where we set up a night lager site that could ambush anyone who was tracking us along the trail. Apparently, none of the NVA were willing to track us in the dark and the night passed quietly. At about 0200 I checked in with the patrol leader, Sgt Thomas, and we put together a SITREP for Recon HQ; it read something like this.

"Pal Joey this is Grim Reaper....SITREP." "Go ahead with SITREP, Grim Reaper." At 0145, RT Grim Reaper observed unidentified aircraft overhead our pos. The aircraft made three low, slow passes over the patrol lager site and the pilot was clearly visible to all team members. As the aerial vehicle made its passes over the patrol, several team members were able to make visual observation. The aerial vehicle was long and slender with what appeared to be straw on the aft end. The pilot was female and was wearing a non-standard black, robe-like flight suit and wide-brimmed, pointed flight helmet. The pilot exhibited no hostile intent as she made her passes over the patrol lager site. The aircraft must have been fitted with a PA system as on the last pass her voice was plainly heard saying "Happy Halloween." She then exited the area at what was estimatyed as
Mach 2+."

Our SITREP created an initial stir at Recon HQ (no one had ever been over-flown by an enemy aircraft before) until they read the entire message. The Recon HQ r/o then laughed and said "got it." Two days later, when we were extracted, Lt Col Steinmetz met us at the top of the hill from the LZ. He said the SITREP was funny, but don't ever submit a false SITREP again.
