mvmhm Posted October 16, 2014 #1 Posted October 16, 2014 I went to an estate sale today and found these - although I originally went to look at an M4 carbine bayonet...the bayonet wasn't a dog, but not sexy either, but I thought it was too much at $75...a Utica blade, but no scabbard. I did find these items though...the man served in the Army Air Corps in 1936 - 1938 or so, then went back in in 1942 as an officer...made it to LTC, and died in 1965. His widow died a couple of months ago. One odd item is a sscrewback DI for the 59th Coastal Artilelry Regiment, which was captured on Corregidor...not sure of the connect yet. There were a couple of military boxes (U.S.), but again, waaay too much..I might go back Sunday and see what's left..... Mark sends
mvmhm Posted October 16, 2014 Author #2 Posted October 16, 2014 The Japanese box is about 20 inches long and 2 inches deep...the characters on the upper right of the lid (I believe), say "Type 8". There are some stamped markings inside the lid, as well as some Kanji scratched into it......
mvmhm Posted October 16, 2014 Author #3 Posted October 16, 2014 I found this in the garage...it's not sexy, but it was really cheap...the handle has been replaced by tape. The scabbard is black lacquered wood, which has some splits to it.....there looks to be some small characters on the hilt, but I don't want to clean the rust off. The Tsuba is iron with no ornamentation...overall length is 21.5 inches.....
mvmhm Posted October 16, 2014 Author #4 Posted October 16, 2014 ..the hilt...when I picked this up, I could almost hear Slim Pickins saying "That's a genuine hari-kari knife...pass it around boys, maybe somebody's got a use for it...."
mvmhm Posted October 16, 2014 Author #5 Posted October 16, 2014 ...and the scabbard...sadly there's nothing else military there...apparently they got rid of his stuff years ago.... Mark sends
mvmhm Posted October 16, 2014 Author #6 Posted October 16, 2014 I found some smaller characters on the tsuba....not sure if I have the picture oriented correctly though..they're hard to see with all the paint on there... Mark sends
Chris_B Posted October 26, 2014 #7 Posted October 26, 2014 Interesting items. ...and now I want some new-tricius and dee-licious popperjacks
