It was build in the 1930s. In June 1940 it was occupied by the Germans. In 1944 it was liberated by advancing American forces on December 10, after the German evacuated, sabotaging the installation.For more info on the advancing American troops in 1944 check this link, the memories from Samuel Pinell, who was with the 325th Engineer Battalion just 5 miles away at another Maginot bunker in winter 1944: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/207242-an-engineers-account-of-the-attack-on-bitche/Fort Casso is a museum today and can be visited. 2 hours guided tour is at 6€ for adults.
