USS Shenandoah Airship Photograph

Found an photo album at the local antique mall today that had a small group of military photographs in it.

Very cool picture! The old Navy airship stuff is very cool and hard to find.

 

I wonder what the story is with the date written onto the back? The U.S. airship program was basically over by 1937.

Very simply, it could have been the date the photo was printed. The USS Shenandoah crashed in September 1925.

Yeah, all but one ended pretty catastrophically. Around here, you can sometimes find pieces of the Shenandoah. I've got two of them.

This photo and piece of the skin of the ill fated USS Shenandoah was sent to my Grand Mother in Brooklyn, NY by her cousin who lived in Ohio. My Grand Mother was a Navy Mother and I always wanted to join the US Navy when I was kid. So, she sent me all kinds of Navy items to include recruiting posters and photos of ships etc.I destroyed most of the items by tacking them to my wall but these were always amongst my most treasured items.Therefore they survived my childhood.
