KASTAUFFER Posted December 5, 2022 Share #305 Posted December 5, 2022 Interesting group to a Marine who served as a Platoon Sgt in the 1st Tank Bn, 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal. He had 1 tank "shot out from under him" according to a newspaper article. He did earn a gold distinguished badge , but this one is not gold. It almost appear to be some sort of a "wearing copy"? USMCR79 Posted December 6, 2022 Share #308 Posted December 6, 2022 In the last 4 years I have been listing any known Rim Numbered Good Conduct Medals that I can find with the assistance of other collectors sharing their information also (Thanks Bruce!!). This GCM was found on Facebook and bought by a friend who later sold it to me. It was listed as just a numbered GCM with no attribution however I was able to attribute it by way of the June 1990 Gleim Medal Auction (No. 24). USMCR79 Posted December 6, 2022 Share #311 Posted December 6, 2022 Charles F. Hirsch served 1914-25 including service as a Sgt. with the 66th & 67th Companies 5th Marine Regiment in France (1918). He was medically discharged in 1925. This medal appears to be a 1920's reissue of a WWI period rim numbered medal. Bill

Reforger Posted August 28, 2023 Share #313 Posted August 28, 2023 Some very nice and interesting medals you guys posted! I'll add these two: Both Marines served in the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War. Cassello was a tank crewman in the 1st Tk Bn. Rocheleau, who had enlisted in the 1930's, was a career Marine. He was an officer by the time he served in Korea. He later retired as a captain. (Thanks Bill for helping with the research!)
USMCR79 Posted August 28, 2023 Share #314 Posted August 28, 2023 This is one of my favorite topics on the USMF.... So about 7 years ago (April 2017) I was at a collector show in Mt. Dora Florida and a good friend Joe Stone saw me and called me over to look at a Marine Good Conduct Medal - Not very impressive (ratty ribbon, no bars, and no research) so Joe gave me a price, I countered and we made a deal. Later that day while eating my lunch I looked up this Marine in the Ancestry Muster Rolls on my phone, I found various entries and then I saw for 1951 "MarDet CL-145 USS Roanoke" - I knew that this was the ship my Dad served on with the Marine Detachment in the 1951-52 timeframe. I finished my lunch and checked back with Joe and he had a few other items, ribbons campaign medals, etc. but no paperwork. On my way home I stopped off at my parents house and showed my Dad these medals and he said the last time he saw them was in 1952 worn by M/Sgt Leroy Ferguson who was the "Top" for the Detachment. For the next hour he told me more about Ferguson and his time on the USS Roanoke than he had told me in 50+ years. Over the previous 30 years my relationship with my Father was up and down but that afternoon we talked more than we had in years. Over the next few months I took time off of work to go over and visit and he would tell me more of his Sea Stories. In September 2017 he passed away but on that day in April we began talking again. Thanks M/Sgt Ferguson!! In the photo my Dad is behind Ferguson on the far left just behind Ferguson's left shoulder.

Reforger Posted August 31, 2023 Share #318 Posted August 31, 2023 Here's one more I'll add. This was definitely one of the older Marines participating in WWII. He served on battleships during the war. The following medals and ribbons were also his, but I have no clue who has them now. Unfortunately the group was split up.
