MattD Posted September 17, 2008 Share #53 Posted September 17, 2008 SAW Gunner vest Craig Does this vest have a label in it? I thought these were the early experimental LBV issued to 9th "Motorized" div at Ft Lewis, Wa 1980s.
craig_pickrall Posted September 17, 2008 Share #54 Posted September 17, 2008 There is no label in the vest. I picked it up in the Ft Bragg area in the late 1980's or early 90's.

Craig I had a friend in the 9th ID that was issued one of them. 1st SFG got them too at Ft lewis in the 1980's Always a neat piece Matt
craig_pickrall Posted September 18, 2008 Share #56 Posted September 18, 2008 Thank you for the additional info on the vest. It is good to know where it was intended to be used. Probably someone in 1st SFG transferred to Bragg.
taucco Posted January 1, 2009 Share #57 Posted January 1, 2009 my humble contribution. Even they are not strictly military issue, these are a couple of QRV vest in blue. They are different from the ones shown in this topic, and they are a little different one another. They are made by Individual Load Bearing Systems. The complete one belonged to a member of New Jersey TEAMS (that was a sort of swat if i understood correctly) the upper row of chest pouches has loops for shotgun shells, the lower row for pistol ammo. below there are 2 grenade pouches, with retention for grenade pins. On the back there is a simple holster and a canteen pouch, attached via slide keepers. And talking about what mr. Pickrall called Saw Gunner Vest, i found it similar to this vest in my collection. It is an Eagle Industries Harris Assault Vest, made in 1991. it has a similar layout with two big hip pouches. From my understanding it was a limited issue to some SF soldiers (never seen a photo of it being worn). It lacks a pouch attached by slide clips on the lower back and closed by a single fastex, roughly the same size of a buttpack. If i remember correctly it was claimed to have been designed by Special Forces LT. COL. Mike (Michael?) Harris in the late 80's. I tried to find informations about him, without luck. Eagle made/makes the Harris Assault Vest only for US Cavalry, I believe. LTC Harris was on the board that designed the LBV-88 vests, if I recall correctly. His vest was somehow related to that process. London Bridge Trading made their own version of the vest at one point.
RTS Posted January 3, 2009 Share #59 Posted January 3, 2009 US Army Special Forces Direct Action Trauma Armor. This doesn't have the armor nor does it have the soft armor for the inside. This piece is unmarked but has a size M in the neck area. The attachment is for a large frame automatic with a laser sight on it. What model pistol it is, I can't remember at this time. Nkomo, Could the kydex holster be for an HK Mk. 23 with a LAM or flashlight on it?
Nkomo Posted January 3, 2009 Author Share #60 Posted January 3, 2009 Nkomo, Could the kydex holster be for an HK Mk. 23 with a LAM or flashlight on it? Actually, I believe so. I can't remember how the holster is marked on the back. I'll have to dig it out and see for sure. Arch

The holster is one of the early versions of the Safariland Kydex. It looks like the M9 Baretta with Surefire flashlight. The vest is the AWS/King (slightly inferior copy of the AWS version) SOF DA vest. These are one of the first modular body armor systems. You can see how Paraclete copied and improved on design. I have a modified version of this with zip-off pack
RTS Posted January 6, 2009 Share #62 Posted January 6, 2009 Matt, Not that I doubt your opinion about the SF 3004 holster on the chest; it just looked a little big for an M9 holster to me. That's gotta be a helluva drawstroke to get your gat out with the holster mounted like that! As for Paraclete copying AWS, Tim D. sure got mad when other people did that to him.... Thanks! The holster on the chest is unusual-I have only seen that as a current OIF/OEF thing (vehicle Ops) as the chest mount would be difficult for CQB. I'll have to look at my Safarilands tonite, I could be wrong. I have a couple early M9 holster with flashlight models. Or Arch could just look on back of holster for us !!! "As for Paraclete copying AWS, Tim D. sure got mad when other people did that to him....", that is the game in tactical gear-everyone copies everyone else. I'm sure Tim D, would deny he copied/improved on the AWS vest-but AWS had that system out in the early 90's. Anyways cool vest
