Nkomo Posted April 17, 2010 Share #454 Posted April 17, 2010 Really nice DCU's Arch! I love those Armoured / Cavalry ones. One day I hope I find a nice 'Thunder Run' Armoured DCU. RobNZ Rob, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I worked at a bookstore and there was a book about the 3rd ID's run to Baghdad and I meant to buy a copy several years ago. I never got around to it and forgot the title. Now that you jogged my memory, I remembered the title (Thunder Run) and just ordered a copy off of Ebay. A guy I went to high school with joined the Army a little after he graduated. I lost contact with him after school and hadn't heard from him for years. One day he comes into the book store and we start talking about our lives. Come to find out, he was with the 3rd ID during the initial invasion of Iraq. He saw a copy of "Thunder Run" and tells me his unit (maybe even his name) was mentioned in the book. Mercenary25 Posted April 19, 2010 Share #456 Posted April 19, 2010 Oh my god robnz.... Arch was right, I would have a heart attack when I saw all of your 173rd and SF DCUs..... I've been looking for them for age and only got luck with one modified DCU. For those beautiful DCUs, I would pay fortune.
robnz Posted April 23, 2010 Share #457 Posted April 23, 2010 Glad to help Arch, and thanks for the kind words Merc! Here is a DCU which arrived the other day. This one belonged to Staff Sergeant Dan Metzdorf of the 82nd Ariborne who was injured in a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2004. Three others were killed in the same blast. Here are some video interviews with the owner
Mercenary25 Posted April 23, 2010 Share #458 Posted April 23, 2010 Very nice. Did you get this DCU from him or you bought it then found his name on youtube?
robnz Posted April 23, 2010 Share #459 Posted April 23, 2010 I spotted it among a lot of surplus DCU's being sold for very little, for less than what the parts would cost, I did a little research and discovered the owner. I believe this one dates to his prior tour of Afghanistan. It also has a little square of reflective material sewn on beneath the SSI. There are a lot of articles about him on the net, I was searching for more information and videos and found the two youtube clips, which were neat to find :w00t: Rob

HoovieDude Posted April 24, 2010 Share #472 Posted April 24, 2010 Thanks for posting all of that, they are a pretty 'involved' organization to say the least. The guy I got it from said that they are "..kind of like a Kellogg/Brown/Root, but different....." Understatement of the decade. And MPRI isn't that obscure in certain circles. And Im not so sure those are "theater made" tapes. Mine on all my DCU's aren't much different, and they were stateside made. I see alot of "theater made" references, that I don't really agree with. I don't think many guys realize the abundance of tailor/laundry shops outside of just about every major installation. Usually owned and operated by Korean or Phillipino ladies. They are notorious for name tapes among other things. As well as various SSI, morale patches, etc, that look just like many of the ones made "in theater". Which most of the little shops in theater that I have seen, are staffed by the good Pinoy type folk. Unless there is some proof or positive provenance with them, I would be careful to call them theater made. Not saying any of this in a negative manner, just an observation based of my experiences. Nkomo Posted April 24, 2010 Share #473 Posted April 24, 2010 Understatement of the decade. And MPRI isn't that obscure in certain circles. Sorry....I worded my statement poorly. What I meant was that us civilians don't hear about these companies and when we find a DCU with these odd name tapes, to us it seems obscure. To the military folks, you may see these guys on a daily basis. For us collectors, we rarely run across these neat DCU's. Hope that clears my statement up.
