Tino Posted August 7, 2014 #1 Posted August 7, 2014 What are your thoughts? Is it safe to assume that this is a war trophies/souvenir shipping box? Mr. Obrecht served in the European theatre, would this be the correct APO address if shipped from Europe? Other shipping boxes I own still have "war trophy" or the contents written on them which makes it easy to identify them. Thanks, Tino
Tino Posted August 7, 2014 Author #2 Posted August 7, 2014 Label reads " I certify that this package contains no U.S. government property."
USCapturephotos Posted August 7, 2014 #4 Posted August 7, 2014 Sure looks like it Tino. I have several in my collection. Many times GI's used German crates for this purpose or I know of one GI who shipped his home in a US "10 in 1" ration cardboard box. I wonder what he shipped home? Paul
gwb123 Posted August 7, 2014 #5 Posted August 7, 2014 You can't read too much into it. For all we know the soldier was shipping extra clothes or personal items, or an antique that he bought (or traded for cigarettes.) Still, it is a neat period piece.
BROBS Posted August 7, 2014 #6 Posted August 7, 2014 I have a German K98 ammo box still with the shipping label and stamps from the vet here in town who sent it home. And the mint German "coconut" canteen he sent home in it! P.S. it says nothing about the contents of the box on the exterior.
Tino Posted August 8, 2014 Author #7 Posted August 8, 2014 Thanks for the feedback guys! Would love to see some of the items mentioned. Maybe a 'show your war trophy shipping box' (with or without contents) topic would be neat. The box has been sitting in the garage collecting dust, I will give it a cleaning and display some German items with it. It should display nicely. Thanks again, Tino

RustyCanteen Posted August 8, 2014 #9 Posted August 8, 2014 APO #1 was the APO for the 1st Infantry Division IIRC, so that is all you will find out there. If you had a legible date on the postage cancel you might be able to track down where the unit was that day, but beyond that you have a very nice box shipped from the war zone.

I will try to get pics of my box/trophy this weekend. -Brian
