Eric Queen Posted August 6, 2014 #1 Posted August 6, 2014 This is kind of a neat piece. My dad found it in a second hand shop a while back. Lewis E. Johnson was from Iowa and enlisted in the Marines on Feb.16, 1906. His first overseas assignment was in the PI as part of Company "F", 2nd Marine Regiment. From 1907 to August 1909 he served at the US Legation in Peking China. On board the USS Charleston in Aug of 1909 then back to the PI at Cavite (Cavite Marines)
Eric Queen Posted August 6, 2014 Author #7 Posted August 6, 2014 I didn't measure it but guessing 24 inches high, something like that.
Hessian Posted August 6, 2014 #8 Posted August 6, 2014 Uhhh.... WOW. I've only seen one other like this and it was from the 1930s. Great piece, glad to see it's preserved behind glass (hopefully UV) I know the silk thread in these tend to fade easily based on some of the photo albums I've seen with similar art work. Congrats!
bobgee Posted August 6, 2014 #9 Posted August 6, 2014 Great piece! I have one to a 1912 Legation Marine. Bobgee
teufelhunde.ret Posted August 6, 2014 #11 Posted August 6, 2014 Superb! For those who may want to see more examples ie Navy and Army, drop by chinamarine.org owned by forum Mod "Dirk"
warguy Posted August 6, 2014 #13 Posted August 6, 2014 "Kind of a neat piece" . What an understatement, and named to the Legation Guard to boot. Gorgeous-thanks for sharing! Kevin
