Hi All,

Thought I'd share these pictures I took of a US Fleet Radio unit at Adelaide River, Northern Territory Australia of a WW2 US Fleet Radio site that was used to intercept Japanese radio communications in the South West Pacific Area. I hope I posted this in the correct section. Enjoy.

The link attached provides lots of information

There's another web page devoted to this site at http://www.ozatwar.com/usnavy/fruadelaideriver.htm

Imagine a US sailor, expecting to spend the war aboard ship or maybe operating a radio at Pearl or Norfolk, but instead finds himself in the Australian bush.

How far would they have had to go to get to a good liberty town?

They'd have to go a long way mate. Being posted here would be a kin to being posted to the edge of the earth. They were over 72 miles from the coast, so no sea breezes and the temperature in wet season hovers about 34 degrees C in the shade with about 85 % humidity. Up until late 43 you had the Japanese AAF and Navy trying to bomb you as well. A Japanese bomb fell on the road near to this site in 43. Mosquitoes and other bugs can get on your nerves and there are crocodiles in the local river near here.
