jeff arthur Posted July 24, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 24, 2014 Hello Paul,The double-post-and-clutch pins were first used on DUI's about 1970,the straight long pin dates a DUI between then & the 1930's,approximately,if a DUI was "serviceable" for wear,i.e. if in good condition & no missing enamel,it could be worn even today,Regulations do not specify attachment pins for the DUI's,I hope I have been of a little help to you,Regards, Jeff
vostoktrading Posted July 24, 2014 Share #3 Posted July 24, 2014 Hmm... I'm no expert on DUI's but I'm sure clutch back DIs have been around a lot longer than that. Jon.

vzemke Posted July 26, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 26, 2014 The 1970 date mentioned in the first reply is incorrect and misleading. Clutch back DIs existed during WWII, but they were the exception rather than the rule. The AAF DI for Air Transport Command is the most common example of this but there are others as well. Both clutch back and pin back DI seem to have been made side by side during the 1950s, with both styles being found on original Korean War uniforms. Clutch back was also the fastening style of choice for most makers in Germany and Japan during the 50s as well. It seems that the pin back style fell out of favor by the end of the 1950s, but there were probably some still floating around after that.
jeff arthur Posted August 20, 2014 Share #6 Posted August 20, 2014 I stand corrected...I have seen quite a few of the German and Japanese made DUI's made with double-post & clutch pins, especially Karl Poeller -Vollrath Germany, and Wellington in Japan, I only meant that DUI's made by U.S. makers "usually" were so equipped after 1970 or so, as a rough estimate... in such a wide field, there are of course a lot of variants too,no misleading was intended... KurtA Posted August 20, 2014 Share #7 Posted August 20, 2014 Bottom line, when it comes to dating a US-made DUI, there is no worthwhile rule of thumb based on "clutch back" or "pinback" that can be used. They were both in use concurrently for many decades. You have to look at the other characteristics of the DUI (e.g., who made it, type of hallmark, base metal, type of catch, unit, etc.). However, with a US-made screwback, you can safely assume it's very early 1940's or prior. With theater-made DUI's, all bets are off for estimating a date based on the means of attachment. You can find all three types of attachments spanning many decades. As with the US-mades, you have to take into account the other characteristics.
