hink441 Posted November 28, 2020 Author Share #301 Posted November 28, 2020 This is a recent pick-up. A beautifully used VF-142 patch with Velcro on the back. This is one of my favorites. It shows wear and tear rub marks right where the shoulder harness would ride on top of the patch.

Salvage Sailor Posted April 27, 2021 Share #309 Posted April 27, 2021 VA-203 Blue Dolphins (ATKRON 203) US Naval Reserve strike fighter squadron tail code AF, flying Corsairs and Skyhawks Attack Squadron 203 (VA-203), nicknamed the Blue Dolphins, was established at NAS Jacksonville, Florida on 1 July 1970, as a reserve force squadron (RESFORON) under a new concept in the reorganization of the Naval Air Reserve Force. The reorganization was intended to make the reserves more compatible with active duty units and to increase their combat readiness. It was redesignated VFA-203 in 1989. R Leonard Posted May 25, 2021 Share #311 Posted May 25, 2021 Original paint on leather VF-11 Sun Downers patch from 1943 This is what it looks like on a side panel of an F4F-4 Here's Himself holding the side panels from his F4F flown out of Guadalcanal in the spring/summer of 1943. When the squadron flew back to Espiritu Santo at the end of their tour, they turned their planes in for whatever future. He removed the panels from his and replaced them with a couple from the grave yard. Photo is circa 1998. And just for fun, a decal, circa 1949 from VF-171 . . . I'd show you a patch, but it's on his flight jacket which is in my daughter's possession.

VB21 Posted June 19, 2021 Share #315 Posted June 19, 2021 Hello, James Sprankle Brown (Bud) was my uncle. In your image, Bud has the patch on his M-421 jacket. Here are a couple of other images with that patch. In the first image, that is George Morris with the patch on his flight suit. Then Bud Brown with Oscar West on the steps at the von Tempsky ranch. George Morris with Bud Brown on the same steps. Then the same image (cropped) that you posted. Then another pic of Gerry, but no patch. Gerry did not like the gold embossed patch. Maverickson Posted October 6, 2021 Share #318 Posted October 6, 2021 Hi All, See two of my favorite USN A-4 Skyhawk related patches. They are among my more rare attack squadron patches and both related to my late father's command. Both those VSF squadrons were short lived. Having been decommissioned immediately following their single combat deployment. Thereafter elements of both squadrons were merged with VA-152. All of which allowed VA-152 to transition from the Skyraider to the Skyhawk. This is the second version of the VSF-1 Warhawks patch and one of the two the squadron had made. Next is the VSF-3 Chessman patch. Created when the newly formed squadron came off line to Yokosuka in 1967. Up and until that time the squadron members wore the VSF-1 patch. As explained to me by members of VSF-3, they were hastily formed using VSF-1 squadron members. Thereafter immediately deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin aboard the (CVS-11) USS Intrepid. The Chessmen patch is among the nicest constructed Vietnam era squadron patch I've encountered to date. That 1st version of the VSF-1 Warhawks squadron patch can be seen attached to the skipper's G-1 directly below. Cheers, Dave

Maverickson Posted November 4, 2021 Share #320 Posted November 4, 2021 Hi All, The following two VA-164 squadron patches are related to my late father's (Air Ops to CAG CVW-16) Vietnam combat deployments. As seen from pages from my father's cruise books. Both are the exact versions utilized by the squadron members for both their 1966-1967 and 1967-1968 Westpac deployments. 1966-1967 (CVA-34) USS Oriskany cruise book 1967-1968 (CVA-34) USS Oriskany cruise book. Salvage Sailor Posted November 7, 2021 Share #322 Posted November 7, 2021 Fighter Squadron 74 (VF-74) Be-Devilers in service 1944 to 1994 F4 Phantoms over Vietnam In early 1972 they transitioned from the F-4B to the F-4J. Between July 1972 to February 1973 the squadron returned to combat in Vietnam on board USS America. During seven periods on the famous Yankee Station VF-74 did not lose a single aircraft to enemy action. VF-74 was just as successful in peace time, winning the CNO Safety "S" in 1974 along with the Battle "E". In 1975, they moved to CVW-8 and took part in the maiden cruise of USS Nimitz. In 1976 they won the Admiral Joseph Clifton Award, making them the top US Navy fighter squadron.
