This patch is from the first VR-54, which flew C-118 transport aircraft, commissioned on 01 October 1972. It was re-established in 1991 with a different official insignia

Picked up this patch at the Raleigh Show. It is a huge VA-75 Sunday Puncher patch. It measures 10" x 7" and has had double-sided tape applied on the back side. I think these were made for the squadron decom ceremony in the late 1990s. Nice patch from the last A-6 squadron.

Here's an interesting one that requires more research

VC-12 Dragons, Fleet Composite Squadron One Two. They're usually knows as the Omars (A4 Skyhawks http://a4skyhawk.info/article-unit/vc12), but at one time they were the Dragons.

Anyone know when this was during their service history? The VP Navy site does list them as the Dragons, but gives no other detail as to when they were Drag-ons (towing targets) and when they became the Omars, either before or after their conversion to the first USNR Composite squadron. At one time they were also converted to a Carrier Early Warning squadron as noted on the VP site, then back to a composite squadron.

This is their typical flying carpet patch we're more familiar with.....

I wonder if it has something to do with their Adversary period? Looks their is a tail code, ‘JY’.

Got the answer from a member on the 'Can You ID' board as to the year but still not specific on the Squadron nickname Dragons.....

The bird (Loon) shown on the patch is from the comic strip Shoe which began in 1977.

Bingo! It was so familiar but I couldn't place it (even though I've read the strip now and then in years past) Although I can't find an example, It also explains the monogram initials on the Loon as depicted on the VC-12 patch. From the final appearance of The Loon.....

Loon has been a beloved character in this strip since it began in 1977, right up until today, when he was abruptly and violently eaten by a shark. We can still see the lower half of his mangled body in the final panel, though that too will presumably soon vanish to the shark’s gullet.

Great looking patch.

I was at Oceana from 1982-2001 and VC-12 was in the next door hangar. I always knew them as the Omars. VC-12 did a bunch of target banner towing duties for the fleet F-4 and F-14 squadrons at Oceana. I would think this patch is probably a local UN-official patch that was made to poke fun at the unglamorous and thankless job of a target tug. The "JY" tail-code is VC-12s tail code prior to being assigned to Reserve Air Wing 20.
