5thwingmarty Posted July 16, 2014 #1 Posted July 16, 2014 My brother's father in law served on the USS Alaska in WWII. He picked up this rifle while in China. Can anyone identify what kind of rifle it is and if it is Japanese or Chinese? He was told it was Japanese when he acquired it but is not really sure. The only marking I could see on it is what looks like a serial number. On the bayonet the only marking is a flower. Thanks, Marty
tarbridge Posted July 16, 2014 #3 Posted July 16, 2014 The Bayonet was mfg at Jinsen Arsenal in Korea.
5thwingmarty Posted July 16, 2014 Author #4 Posted July 16, 2014 Thank you for the quick answer. I have passed the info on to my brother and his wife. Her brother is going to be the proud caretaker of this. My sister in law is keeping her father's trench art ashtray made from a US Navy 5-inch shell end. It is inscribed with USS Alaska on the side. Timberwolf Posted July 16, 2014 #5 Posted July 16, 2014 That's a great set, the Korean made bayonet's are some of the more desirable makers.
warcollect1942 Posted July 23, 2014 #7 Posted July 23, 2014 The rifle is type 99. It appears to be a last ditch. The bolt handle is turned not plumb shaped. The rear sight appears to be non adjustable. If you have a better picture of the receiver it would tell a lot more.
warcollect1942 Posted July 23, 2014 #8 Posted July 23, 2014 Looking at the receiver I see the Jinsen star. It matches the bayonet. It is a late war rifle. Nice piece.
5thwingmarty Posted July 23, 2014 Author #9 Posted July 23, 2014 Sorry I couldn't get better photos, and thanks again for all the info. I have passed the info on to the rifle's current caretakers (my brother and his wife) so they can pass the info on to her brother when he is able to pick the rifle up. Their dad is in a care home and I don't think rifle war trophies are welcome there. Marty
sundance Posted October 20, 2014 #11 Posted October 20, 2014 I love those type 99's, in large part because my dad was in the Pacific with the 32nd ID.
