What's Bad About Wire Hangers?

Recommended Posts

The acids in wooden hangars can cause discoloration in textiles. Will hanging your uniforms on wood hangars turn them into a mass of thread in a matter of months? No, but most museums look at the very long haul when it comes to preserving textiles. The absolute best way to preserve textiles is flat storage in an acid free box and out of the light. Most collectors, however, don't have the luxury of spending large amounts of $$$ on acid-free boxes, so if you must hang your uniforms, padded plastic hangars are your best bet. (And plastic hangars with padding don't have to cost more than wood hangars) Use your own best judgement with your uniforms, or better yet contact a textile conservator at your state or local historical society to see what they have to say.
