NAVSEC and COMM patches - Spooks & Sparks

Naval Network Warfare Command's History

In 2002, some 23 organizations from several commands, including the former Naval Space Command, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Command, Fleet Information Warfare Center, and Navy Component Task Force - Computer Network Defense were brought together to form Naval Network Warfare Command, emphasizing the organization's focus on the operation and defense of the Navy's networks.

In 2005, with the alignment of Naval Security Group, NETWARCOM brought the former Naval Security Group Activities (NSGAs) under its umbrella and the mission of the command fundamentally changed, making it the Navy's lead for Information Operations, as well as Networks and Space.

The assumption, alignment and integration of Fleet Intelligence Type Commander duties, responsibilities and functions at NETWARCOM in 2008 began a measured and evolutionary process to improve integrated Fleet Intelligence and ISR readiness. This alignment provided a single Fleet champion for ISR and positions Fleet Intelligence for better and timelier support to fleet operations.

In 2009, the Secretary of Defense directed the establishment of U.S. Cyber Command and the establishment of supporting commands to U.S. Cyber Command by each of the services. The chief of naval operations (CNO) officially established U.S. Fleet Cyber Command (FCC) and recommissioned U.S. 10th Fleet on 29 January 2009 in response to this direction.

With the establishment of U.S. Fleet Cyber Command / U.S. 10th Fleet, Naval Network Warfare Command was reorganized and its mission revised Direct, Operate, Maintain and Secure the Navy's portion of Department of Defense Information Network (DODIN) and to deliver reliable, secure and robust Space warfighting capabilities in support of strategic, operational and tactical missions across the Navy.

My uncle was an OTRG Radioman (Cryptology) and spent most of his 30 years at several of these stations. I was an OS and worked with the CTs and ISs (and EWs and RMs) throughout my career. I had this rudimentary patch made for our ship's CIC/Spook team in '88.

I do not profess to be a militaria expert, but I conduct as much research as I am capable of and then write about my findings.
Check out my blogs, The Veteran's Collection (general militaria) and Chevrons and Diamonds (military baseball)

I posted this one in the really big Patch thread, The patch is for CT's flying with VQ-1, confirmed by a CT who has the patch. The background actually represents Japan.
