WWI Trench Art Hat

I've always been fascinated with trench art from the WWI era, so when I happened upon this piece a couple of years ago I had to have it. I only wish, as with so many other militaria collectibles, that I would have received a bit of information about it's origin.

This appears to have been an ashtray since the inside is charred and sooty. Other than that, all I know is that it was created from an artillery shell made by Remington UMC in 1915.

Nice trench art hat.

The ones with US insignia are much harder to find than those with UK insignia-- these seem to have been very popular with the Brit soldiers.

Most of those in my collection look to have been used as ashtrays as well!

Thanks guys...

Scott--I would love to see some of yours. After I picked this one up, I searched the entire internet looking for other examples and came up empty-handed except for one very small hat.

The first shows residue of being used as an ashtray.

I have some more of these-- not sure where I have them at. If I find them, will post them!
