Greg Robinson Posted February 8, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 8, 2007 Howard Now this one of yours looks good...proper color shade so likely USMC but hard to prove without markings. Here's a salty example of a 1942 USMC pith helmet that was apparently issued at boot camp. It has the Marine Private's name written on the inside brim, first with an ink pen and then with ink stamp. And markings showing a USMC contract awarded to International Hat Co. The interior, originally green, has faded. Greg Robinson Posted February 8, 2007 Share #4 Posted February 8, 2007 This is another early USMC version. Craig Are you sure about that NOm contract number? The earlier NOm prefix contract number I have a record of is Oct 1939 and it's in the 25K range. Yours sounds way too early for a fiber helmet. NOm 25772.....Poncho........ craig_pickrall Posted February 8, 2007 Share #5 Posted February 8, 2007 I did that pic 2 or 3 years ago. I will dig it out now and take another look. PLEASE NOTE: THIS COMMUNITY MEMBER, SADLY, HAS PASSED AWAY Please click here to read the tributes to Craig
craig_pickrall Posted February 8, 2007 Share #6 Posted February 8, 2007 Greg, I have checked it and have a correction to make. It is either 48997 or 43997. I'm not sure how I missed that sneaky 4 before. The date stamp is to light to read. Thanks for calling my attention to it. Greg Robinson Posted February 8, 2007 Share #7 Posted February 8, 2007 Greg, I have checked it and have a correction to make. It is either 48997 or 43997. I'm not sure how I missed that sneaky 4 before. The date stamp is to light to read. Thanks for calling my attention to it. NOm 43997 would be Feb-Mar 1944 NOm 48997 would be late Summer 1945. I'd vote for the 1944 date on your fiber helmet Greg Robinson "marine-kabar"**PLEASE NOTE: THIS COMMUNITY MEMBER, SADLY, HAS PASSED AWAY** http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/106069-rip-greg-robinson/
