Need help with two ww2 era DI's (interesting story)

So my mom's friend found out I collect ww2 stuff, and she told me she had some "pins" that I could have if I wanted. I figured they might be medals like good conduct, victory etc.

 

She hands me a small jewelry type box, and inside are these two DI's, a telegram, and an EGA that I think may be unrelated.

 

First, here are the two DI's:

 

 

So the story goes that this guy (my mom's friend's uncle) was in ww2... and afterwards fell in with a rough crowd from Mexico.. probably doing something illegal like smuggling etc. I am unsure whether he was in the reserves still, or whether this was towards the end of ww2. He apparently went to Mexico to deal with some "business" and never returned.

 

Here is the telegram calling him back to service for some reason:

(First name on the list)

 

He never showed back up.. for this call or for anyone.

 

A family member went to the area of Mexico he was supposedly visiting looking for him... but came back with no trace. He was never located.

 

Sort of a crazy story, huh?

Pretty crazy story, my guess is that he got involved with gangsters.

The first DI is the 80th Field Artillery and the second one is the 23rd Infantry Regiment
