Mike34charlie Posted June 5, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 5, 2014 Usmilitarymedals.com lists this as an award AND unit crest. Do cadre where this or cadets? If it's cadre, why do they not where the Cadet Command DUI? Please clarify.
Stuart GI Posted June 10, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 10, 2014 The Army Mottoes List from TIOH shows this as "ROTC Basic Camp Gauntlet Award." Mike
Mike34charlie Posted June 10, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted June 10, 2014 I couldn't find any criteria or information. Are you personally knowledgeable of the award Stuart GI?
Stuart GI Posted July 11, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 11, 2014 Mike, I went to ROTC Summer Camp back in 1972. I never heard of this award until I looked up the motto. Mike
Allan H. Posted July 11, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 11, 2014 I attended ROTC Basic Camp at Ft Knox, KY in July 1985. The six weeks of training culminated with a series of leadership challenge stations and a Field Training Exercise called "The Gauntlet." As I recall, the top team received a silver metal badge for their reward. The interesting thing about the badge is that I don't believe it was authorized to be worn on the ROTC uniform, so basically, the "winners" got them pinned on their fatigue shirts at the end of camp and then never wore them again. As I keep thinking about this, I believe that weapons qualification to include qualification with the M-16 rifle and a grenade assault course, the land navigation course, a 50 yard swim, and our scores on the APRT (Army Physical Readiness Test) were also calculated in the award. Hope this helps. Allan

rlyoun3910 Posted August 17, 2014 Share #7 Posted August 17, 2014 This is a big deal to ROTC kids because it can afford them a Regular Army commission. Everything counts. If the cadet attends a military school, then the Gauntlet award can be worn on their uniforms while at school. Used to be only the top 10 percent of the cadets at ROTC Advanced Course for each summer class. RA commissions are hard to come by.

rlyoun3910 Posted August 31, 2014 Share #10 Posted August 31, 2014 No, there's probably a slight rule at 1st ROTC Command, but not a part of the ROTC uniform per se. Every school can and do alter the uniforms: i.e. patches, ribbons, other awards. The Gauntlet Award was worn usually one time on the fatigue uniform. I've seen them worn on a black beret that some schools authorize for wear. So guidelines are regional, by school, or other. Some ROTC department, usually Junior ROTC allow the students to develop their own regulations. Part of the learning endeavor. Colleges are more rigid as are military schools. The public universities with a senior ROTC department will adhere to Army Regulations as preparation for the students to get used to them.--Ray
