U.S. Ammo Box

I recently acquired this wooden ammo box with brass fittings, all in great condition.

 

The bottom front edge is not cut and angled for use with the M-1917A1 tripod, but it

has a heavy leather handle instead of a canvas one.

 

Can anyone help me with an approximate time frame for this piece?

Could it be a half blind dovetail box that somehow retained its leather strap? Do the markings say CHEST 49-1-84 and does it have arrow markings instead of the earlier bullet markings inside?

It is of half blind construction, but the only markings I have found so far are the black silhouettes of three cartridges on the inside bottom.

I WOULD SAY WW1 era.I have found a couple dozen over the years with the leather handles.

That tripod or cradle didn't have provisions to mount an ammo box. So no cut-outs on the boxes for that purpose.

 

Just sat in the dirt.

I thought it might be of WWII vintage but this is not my area of expertise.

 

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the angled bottom front edge of some of these boxes was for?
