bellasilva Posted May 29, 2014 #1 Posted May 29, 2014 I got this neat little photo in the mail today. My wife likes it as she was stationed in Iceland while in the Navy around 2003. The 759th was sent to Iceland in 1942 as part of its garrison force. They moved to the UK in 1943 and landed in Normandy on D+10, June 16 1944. There they were attached to the 2nd ID and fought in St.-Lo. The battalion was then attached to the 4th Cavalry group and eventually fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Their main equipment consisted of the M3 Stuart and the M24 Chaffee.
Brig Posted May 29, 2014 #2 Posted May 29, 2014 Interesting image. The Army relieved the USMC 1st Provisional Brigade in Iceland in spring of 1942
Allan H. Posted May 30, 2014 #3 Posted May 30, 2014 Perhaps it is because the 759th Armored relieved the 1st Marine Provisional Brigade that they took on the unit nickname "Devil Dogs" or "Devil Doggers." Thanks for sharing the photo Bellasilva and for the history lesson Brig. Allan
501stGeronimo Posted May 30, 2014 #4 Posted May 30, 2014 Speaking of the 759th TB, I have a theater made blue and red tab that goes below the AD patch. Has Devil Dogs on it. Pretty cool!
Brig Posted May 30, 2014 #5 Posted May 30, 2014 Perhaps it is because the 759th Armored relieved the 1st Marine Provisional Brigade that they took on the unit nickname "Devil Dogs" or "Devil Doggers." Thanks for sharing the photo Bellasilva and for the history lesson Brig. Allan I didn't know that was their nickname, quite interesting, and perhaps quite right My turn to thank you for the history lesson!
JoeBeeJo Posted July 23, 2024 #7 Posted July 23, 2024 Hi bellasilva. Is there any chance you have this photo scanned in better resolution? I am investigating the whereabouts, history and old barrack locations of the 759th tank battalion in Iceland and would greatly appreciate if you could help me here ☺️
