hink441 Posted May 29, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 29, 2014 I just found this shell in a local antique shop. It is a USN 40mm saluting shell. It has been cut down and a name has been affixed to the side of the case. I suspect it was made for an end of tour award or maybe a retirement gift. The shell has 40mm MK2 SALUTING marked on the bottom. This one is dated 9-44. I know the modern ones use a steel case now. I thought this was kinda neat. 1936farmall Posted June 13, 2014 Share #5 Posted June 13, 2014 Nice shell casing. I brought one back in the 90s off the USS Nimitz. We fired a salute when we passed the USS Arizona. After manning the rails and the salute was over I seen the shell casings on the deck and asked for one. They let me have it which I still have today. It's taller than yours. Brings back memories. hink441 Posted June 14, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted June 14, 2014 Thanks Michael, I was on the Nimitz in '97 and we also went to Pearl Harbor. I was in VF-211. Chris
