Just thought i would post this little gem that i snagged on Ebay last month

It looks un-issued to my rookie eye , it also came with a AF shipping slip attached

The chamois ear cups and brow flap have no signs of wear or staining at all , no receivers installed either

Hard to find helmet!

Basis of issue: one each to exposed gunners in heavy and very heavy bombardment aircraft and when requested by Air Force Commander.

40,000 were procured in October 1943

Thanks Dustin for the info , when they say "exposed" waist gunners i presume on B24's and B17's ?

Most of these types of helmets i have seen ,dont show any Oxy masks press studs ???? Know of a reason why ???

I suspect any position exposed to the elements.

Cannot answer the question about the O2 studs but the helmet is joint army/navy specification AN-H-16 drawing number AN-6543. This helmet was cancelled in October 1944 meaning no further procurements were made after that date. The procurement quantity I gave you was as of September 1944 so that number is probably the actual quantity total manufactured.

Carl,

Not to hijack your thread but here are a couple of photos of my AN-H-16 helmet. Excellent condition and was obviously issued as the rear has affixed a leather name tag (same as on flight jackets) to a JB McKenna.
