Thank you so much Ricardo.

Very interesting history of the surrender.

I'm sure Adolf wasn't happy.

And the accompanying photos are first class.

More than a thorough answer to my question.

HI, I just found an M1 Fixed bail/Front Seam helmet ID'd to a Lasse Hekvig from North Dakota. I haven't found much, I don't really know where best to research WW2 soldiers. One thing I found was a letter his wife had written years ago saying he was in the Army Air Force at Fortaleza, Brazil for 2yrs. I believe '43-'45. I didn't even know we had soldiers in Brazil. Can somebody please tell me what his mission might have been there? Also, would he have worn one of these snake patches?

Thank you for any help.

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

During the WW2 only Brazilian soldiers who were in Italy in the 5th U.S. Army used the "Smoking Cobra" patch.

In Brazil, the US Army soldiers used the South Atlantic Command patch during the war.

Ryan,

My guess would be that his unit was involved in anti-submarine or anti-ship missions.

With Otto Fretter-Pico commander of the 148th Infantry Division. The ceremony of Fretter-Pico's surrender to the Brazilians is still reenacted in Italy every 25 April in Fornovo and Collecchio.
