anton67 Posted May 14, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 14, 2014 Hi, I mostly collect M1s but I came across this grouping that I really liked so I picked it up. It is a USMC pilots helmet. The pilot served in VN. Unfortunately I posted it in the wrong section so here is the original link: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/209119-vietnam-usmc-pilot-helmet/ What I know so far thanks to member B229 is that it an APH-6B with VMA-121 markings. The ear cups were probably replaced at some point. The APH-6A/B helmets were adopted in 1968, so it's possible this helmet could be from the VMA-121's time in Vietnam. B229 found this: http://books.google....skyhawk&f=false Note the photo caption on the right. Major John H. Buchanan. Awarded the DFC for action in Vietnam, but with a different Skyhawk squadron: VMA-311. He obviously transferred from one to the other. Both squadrons were assigned to MAG-12 in Vietnam, so it's entirely possible that he transferred between the two. Any other info would be greatly appreciated. There are more photos when you go to the original posting but here are a few choice photos.

littlegto Posted May 26, 2014 Share #8 Posted May 26, 2014 Excellent find with a lot of character. I have been focusing a little more on USMC flight helmets lately.

mohawkALSE Posted May 29, 2014 Share #10 Posted May 29, 2014 The little nylon bag appears to be a variation of rigger made Oxygen Mask storage bag. There are numerous styles of them that were locally made,
anton67 Posted June 3, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted June 3, 2014 Thank you for the kind comments. I really like this helmet a lot. I do not really collect flight helmets. This one spoke to me though because of the history. I am interested in Vietnam (WWII & Korea also). I generally collect M1 helmets from those eras. Having a named helmet though is really where it is at for me.
