Squadron Patch w/Seal

Would appreciate any help in id'ing this one. Looks like a north or south pole marker, can't figure out what the object is that the seal is "detecting"?

That is a beautiful patch. I guess that is one more I will have to be on the lookout for.

It is WW II, and made fairly early on.

 

This is one of the originals that the Patch King had for sale during the war, so there is a possibility the design changed along the way. It has also been attributed to Disney Studios, but I can't recall if that has been confirmed or not.
