I'm a navy collector, I found this in a large box of navy rates I just got. Its like half the size of normal usmc chevrons. Is it USMC ROTC?

What's the deal with the lamp?

Yep - the "lamp of learning," used instead of cross rifles on Marine Corps Junior ROTC chevrons.

Why a lamp? This definition tells the story behind that:

"The symbolism of the lamp of learning comes from ancient Greece. Diogenes was a Greek philosopher, who used to carry a lamp around during daylight, and proclaim he was searching for an honest man. Since then the image of the lamp has come to represent the search for knowledge."
