Persian Gulf Command Posted April 28, 2014 Share #1 Posted April 28, 2014 I was looking for a 504 PIR oval and a forum member pointed out this item. I bought it now what is it? The description states: Very Rare 1944 U.S. Air Force Air Base Security Sicily Greenback patch; 1.5+ inches in diameter
John Conway Posted April 28, 2014 Share #2 Posted April 28, 2014 Could be a Chemical branch cap patch but a little on the small side. They are normally 2" diam. I have seen similar examples worn as backing for collar discs in ROTC units but they usually have a hole in the center for a screw back collar disc. Perhaps this one is for a later era when a clutch back collar disc was worn?
Allan H. Posted April 28, 2014 Share #3 Posted April 28, 2014 This is not a parachute oval, though the colors mimic a 504th PIR oval. I tend to agree with John. I will bet that it was a cap disk, probably for an ROTC unit. I could see a ROTC rank dot pinned to one. THe blue doesn't look dark enough to me to be Chemical, and the yellow doesn't look orange enough to me to be Air Corps. It is an oddity!
