can't post photobucket pics now?

I just looked at my thread "oddly silvered navigator wing" and those pic links seem dead?

Are the pics maybe still in your Internet cache?

Bob, those do look pretty good. Like you said earlier the background makes a big difference. I've been meaning to set up a little photo booth anyway, this is good incentive.

If you can find them, they make 4-foot wide rolls of photo backdrop paper that sell for about $30. Home Depot now carries some white vinyl 4x8 sheets of wall covering: it is so thin you can roll it up. I have an indoor tabletop photo booth with the paper and use the 4x8 vinyl in the garage. My garage faces north so when I open the door I get shadow-free lighting: it's great for photographing uniforms. Inside I use fluorescent light fixtures. Without good lighting, sharp focus and a clean background, it doesn't matter whether your photos are 30KB or 300KB. I have been producing photos professionally for websites - including online catalogs - since the mid 1990's and, ultimately, file size has little to do with the onscreen quality. It matters some, but doubling file size does not double the quality. Now I did a lot of print graphics too over the years and when I was doing books and magazines, bigger was better, but even then there was a point where getting even bigger made no difference in the final image display.

All of the images I posted here were shot with a 3 megapixel camera, by the way. I have mega-megapixel cameras but you loose sharpness when shrinking, say, 12 megapixel images down to web sizes, whether it's to 50kb of 250kb. Fewer megapixels and a better lens is often your best choice.

I completely agree with the mods on this. The most powerful aspect of the Forum is the research capability and it is very frustrating to find a thread with photos that have disappeared.

I also agree with the thought behind the change and I like the increased size of photos, but mine doesn't work. I'm still stuck at 150k as of last night. I've tried a bunch of things and none worked.

I agree with the new guidelines for posting photos on the forum. I had posed this question a couple years ago.

Hosting Versus Posting

http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/122680-hosting-versus-posting/

What was already clear to me was the loss that comes with missing images.

Along with my anxiety to have to reduce, I was also lazy. Photo Bucket was a quick way to post great photos. I still needed to hear input from other forum members with a hope that hosting would still be a viable option under certain circumstances.

Being completely convinced otherwise, I stopped using the hosting site. It did take me a while to start getting satisfactory results. I still have a lot of trouble with documents.

I haven't posted yet with the 250k. I'm sure this will make my posting easier.

I have a premium photobucket account and am super comfortable using it.....but I am down with change also.

In fact, I just uploaded my first picture to the forum here - http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/207443-usmc-expeditionary-medal-ribbon-bar-wnumber/

some quick resizing and it was done, not bad!

I do want the pictures to be around for a long time.

I'm happy for the change.

As a long standing member of several forums, this has always been a sore point for many when coming across an older thread when most, if not all the photos, have been removed. The thread then becomes totally useless. I have always felt that if you wanted to take the time to post images to a discussion forum, then those photos should become a permanent part of it.

It would be nice if a member could occasionally go back and edit a photo (better resolution or resizing) instead of having to repost a new photo but, I also understand the issues that could develop with that. One suggestion I might make, in the interests of the forum, is to remove the ability of a member to go in and delete one or all of the photos they have added since joining. Though I like the ability to do that, it does allow for a disgruntled member to erase all the photos and we're right back where we are today with useless threads. Might be something to consider. If a member feels that strongly to have an image(s) removed, I'm sure admin could accomodate those wishes on a case by case basis. It preserves the forum threads integrity.

As far as 250kb being enough, I seem to manage okay with 150kb. Now, I need to figure out what to do with an additional 100kb?? ;)

My thoughts anyway.

This is ~249kb and it's probably too big.

Just a few observations.I like the new size allotment.I like to post as detailed pics and scans as possible so I think this is a move in the right direction.
I don't like posting through a third party site because it's just one more step and I like to streamline processes as much as possible.I use Photoshop and
have been sizing my images at around 8-900 pixels @ 72 dpi and saving them as jpegs @ quality 3 (low).(See screenshots)I'm guessing that now I can increase the quality and probably the size too,or do I now have to do nothing,as the size will automatically be adjusted?

Also,I was looking at some of my old posts and thought that it would be nice to be able to post some new better images as I'm now using a scanner for my patch pics instead of a camera.Too bad there is no provision for "switching" out a photo for an improved image in an old thread without starting a whole new thread, which is redundant.

High Flight

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silver wings;

Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there

I've chased the shouting wind along and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue

I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,

where never lark, or even eagle flew;

and while, with silent, lifting mind I've trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Just an FYI to those using photoshop:

You can save an original high-quality edited photo for your own records/use.

Once you have this file go to File>Save for Web

Select JPG (usually medium quality) and this will drastically reduce your filesize (name it as something else).

SnagIt works very well also, and it costs much less than Photoshop (I have both). It's also great for taking screenshots from the web. This is a 239kb size photo, a screenshot of a very large .TIF file.

Note: Click on the below photo to bring it to fill size. It's as large as anyone would need to post for detail, IMHO...

IMHO, I think this change is overall a good thing. I did receive the notice and wondered what I may need to do. I'm one of the members who have been using the third party method since I started posting photo's about 4 years ago.

If there's a thread presently that walks me thru what I need to do going forward regarding posting pics, could someone point me in that direction? Bob thanks for your earlier posts here, I can be a slow learner sometimes.

Will I need to actively do something with the images I've posted here in the past?

To chime in on this, I completely agree with the reason that drove the decision to do this. Going back through posts that have broken images due to the stated reasons or due to company proxy servers blocking certain nefarious/notorious (for porn-hosting) image hosts (yes, I visit the site while at work).

However, I tend to agree with others that the criteria for uploading useful images severely limits those who lack access to decent imaging tools and/or the know-how to accomplish what was a very simple task, now made complex. I am a bit of a stickler for posting images that are, at the very least, useful.

In order to do this (at least from my software-limited work computer) I will need to upload an image...say from my image source...to my Flickr account. Using their tools, I will then need to perform several steps in order to crop and resize the image to a suitable size...through trial and error in order to achieve a 250kb file size. Then, download the image back to my computer and attempt an upload. Sadly, Flickr will sometimes change the JPG format to PNG rendering it invalid for upload to the USMF (as you have these file-types blocked or the software is greatly limited). So, after 10-15 minutes of time spent on a single image, I am left with either a) no image to post or B) one completed and reconsidering the idea of posting at all, not wanting to spend an hour to upload 4-5 other amplifying images. So, I don't post.

Upping the limit to 250kb is a good first step. But to stop there, is way too restrictive to properly execute on correcting a well-stated usability problem.

Hello all. As a new member I understand the decision to not allow photo bucket. That being said, photobucket was simple fast and easy for me at least to post pics. I just tried to post using a picture take from my iPad....with the new size limit, the picture was still too big. For those of us with mobile devices, it would be nice to just take the picture and be able to attach it. I think there was a thread on how to downsize pics from iPad and iPhone then post....I'll have to look that up

I do have a question. I've been using photobucket since day one and have posted/shared many groups. I went back through my postings today and noticed only about 50% of my posts from the last 7 years have working photo links. Is there anything I can do to get them to show up again? Is it a sizing issue I could possibly fix? I understand wanting to make the change going forward, but losing half my posts photos from the last 7+ years would be very disappointing.

You could re-post the images directly to the forum. That would ensure that they are available for everyone to see. Unfortunately over time such links can get broken as files are rearranged on the host site which is a disappointment to many.

I think you're looking for sympathy and you're not going to get much, unfortunately.

You posted via photobucket in the past, even though multiple requests were made to use the forum hosting instead of photobucket (or whatever other flavor of host you chose). That was your choice, you made it, and it's done. You can't change the past.

Now, the rule is that you use the forum photo hosting. This might cause some heartburn, but you have to do that way. Any amount of complaining or pity parties are not going to change the rule back to the way it used to be.

We welcome you to embrace the new rule and move forward with it. You can't change what happened in the past, but you have every ability to change how you operate in the future. The new rule might not be something that you like, but you can't change that either. You have to move forward and get on board with what the new policy is, as it is now the rule of the forum.

Happy collecting (and posting) -

I'll chime in...

I have posted high quality photos directly to the forum since I joined way back it it's crawl phase. The only time I've used photo bucket was in the sales forums, as after 30 days the topics get deleted so I never had to risk my photo disappearing. It can be done, it takes a little more time and effort, but it can be done

As for the 'behind the scenes' decisions...well, that's the right of the owner of any privately owned facility/site/institution...there's no shareholders here. Complaining about the owners decisions is kind of like complaining about the color your neighbor paints his house. You don't have to like it, but you can't do anything about it. You can choose to drive by his house on your way to work and/or swing by for a beer, or you can take a different road. For a free forum, we sure get a lot of complaints/demands. We could be like other places and charge you to post photos at all, but what fun would that be?

I know it's annoying, but it's not like the forum forced you to use off-site hosting. We have tried to encourage direct uploads for years. Sadly after years of asking members to post directly to the forum we finally had to outright ban outside photo hosting links. It's too confusing for members who want to read a reference thread that is 22 pages long only to find all the linked photos are gone.

I understand what you are all saying. But since using photobucket was allowed in the past, shouldn't past posts with photobucket photos still be able to be viewed? I get why the rule was changed, and actually agree with the principal behind it. My question would be, is there a way it can be done so posts pre the rule change are not effected? I put a lot into my posts and honestly never knew using photobucket was frowned upon until just a few months ago when Dave let me know. Unfortunately at that point, 6 1/2 years of posting was behind me.

One last question I have is why are some of my posts with photobucket photos still able to be viewed and others are not?

It's just too bad as half of my 50 topics are now without photos.

Yeah, this also applies to E-Bay links, so many times members just link an interesting item that's up there without posting photos of it, in time the item is sold, and the images for it removed.
