I have quite a few UNIS items but here is my latest. The marine was A/1/21 and was wounded on Iwo Jima. I have been wracking my brain trying to decode what the UNIS marking might mean for the 3rd Marine Division. Anyway, here it is. Very best, Bill K. I believe this is 1st division but need help reading the unit numbers. Your guy is Lionel S. Reynolds. Enlisted in 1937 and went to officer's school in late 43'. Was a marine gunner in early 43' assigned to Special Troops, H&S Battery, 3rd Weapons Battalion, which is what the <621> stands for. It makes sense he had an early pack if he enlisted in 37'. I would have to know the marine's name in order to get an answer. (at least the last name). These series of numbers I have figured out. 100 = 9th Marines 200 = 21st Marines 300 = Divisional HQ 400 = ??? 500 = Engineers 600 = Special Troops (tank and weapons battalions) 700 = Service Troops (transportation, medical and supply battalions) 800 = ??? 900 = ??? I might start a thread for people to post their 3rd MarDiv unis marked items that are ID'd and that might get us to the point where we can figure out the other three series of numbers. Hi Wilson, I have been compiling a list from all the 3rd Div UNIS marked items I have seen. My only change so far is that 300 = 3rd Marines. I think between your list and what I've found out, we might have all the series numbers ID'd. Then it's just breaking those down into all the number codes.

And I'm referring to beyond this thread - to even what's available in the market. A lot of 4th, some 1st, a little 5th. Has anyone ever seen any 6th MarDiv UNIS marked gear (circle)? I have two 6th MarDiv unis marked sea bags and both have circles.

Thanks Stony Paul O'Brian was a demolition expert and sapper who marked mines on Iwo Jima the night before the invasion. The only survivor of his 5 man team. Who knows why there is a ton of blood on that lower, but too me it was carried on Iwo with him, it also has his unis on it and it’s named to him.
